Little $uzie Apartment

Designer’s Notes

「Hey little Suzie, you don’t have to cry no more」というコーラスのフレーズ。

Little $uzie

We are currently working on our Fall/Winter 2027 Collection. Next year, Little $uzie will celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Through Designer’s Notes, I would like to gradually share more about the background of the brand. This time, I will talk about something I have often been asked about: the origin of the brand name.

Before I began working in fashion, I spent about ten years making music. As Youngshim, I wrote and composed my own songs and sang them, but I also took on work such as backing vocals privately, without revealing my artist name. The pen name I used for that work was Little $uzie.

The name comes from “Little Suzie,” a song by the American artist Kelis. At the time, Kelis was making music with The Neptunes, the production duo of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, and “Little Suzie” was also produced by The Neptunes.

The chorus goes, “Hey little Suzie, you don’t have to cry no more.” In contrast to its light, bossa nova–like sound, the lyrics carry a deep message that reflects the darker side of society. That contrast, the tenderness of a voice that seems to speak to small children, and Kelis’s husky vocals are things I still love to this day.

Later, I realized that I was drawn more to making things, and to what lies behind expression, than to standing in front of people, and I stopped singing. I first started an online shop selling clothes I had sourced, and gave it my former pen name. Eventually I began making original pieces, and Little $uzie gradually changed from the name of a shop into the name of a brand.

One more thing: why the “S” in Little $uzie is a dollar sign, “$.”

It reflects the influence of the cultures I came to love through music—soul, R&B and hip-hop. Giving shape to what you believe in from nothing, and making a path where there is none: that was the feeling behind the spelling. Looking back now, it feels a little youthful, even a bit embarrassing, but I think it was my own way of expressing myself at the time.

Beyond its literal origin, the name Little $uzie also carries another meaning: “something that tickles a little heart.”

From music to clothing. The means of expression has changed, but music remains one of the important cultural backgrounds that shape Little $uzie.

Now, with our 10th anniversary just ahead, I find it fascinating all over again that a single pen name became a brand name over such an unexpected span of time. And when I think that Little $uzie—“something that tickles a little heart”—has carried us this far, I feel a deep affection for it.
