Bauhaus Imaginista: A School in the World by Marion von Osten and Grant Watson

Sale price¥8,000

Since its founding in 1919, the Bauhaus functioned as an international institution. Students and teachers came from Croatia, Hungary, Japan, Palestine, Russia, Switzerland, the United States, Weimar, Dessau and Berlin. With its international, avant-garde perspective and practical curriculum, the Bauhaus had a profound impact. From Eastern spirituality to Constructivism, machine production and the New Bauen movement, the Bauhaus philosophy was developed through a variety of influences and interpretations. Bauhaus art and design also included intercultural elements gleaned from exposure to non-Western cultures, books and museum collections, and interactions with international students and visiting lecturers.

As part of a larger project to mark the Bauhaus's centenary, this book highlights the experimental and open-minded nature of modernism and its inherent internationalism, showing, more than ever before, the crucial role that the Bauhaus played in remaking the relationship between art and society.
