MASTRY by Kerry James Marshall
A collection of African-American artist Kerry James Marshall's work. This book compiles key works from the artist's work, published in conjunction with a major retrospective of one of America's greatest painters. Born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1965, before the Civil Rights Act was passed and witness to the Watts Riots, Marshall has continued to document the African-American experience with great imagination. Known for his large-scale interiors, landscapes, and portraits of powerful black figures, Marshall explores the story of African-American history from the slave ships to the present day, drawing on his deep knowledge of art history, from the Renaissance to 20th-century abstraction, and the comic book and muralist traditions.
His landscapes, which directly depict the lives of the black middle class with rich colors, brushstrokes, and intricate patterns, evoke a wide range of emotions, creating powerful paintings that depict the social position of African Americans in American history. This book includes a wealth of essays by various curators and writers. Over 100 paintings from throughout his career are thematically presented, including history paintings, nudes, portraits, beauty expressed as self-portraits, landscapes, religion, and the politics of black nationalism.
