Ruth Asawa: Citizen of the Universe by Emma Ridgway and Vibece Salthe
Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) is an extremely important artist whose reputation is growing worldwide. Her first solo exhibition in Europe, Citizen of the Universe, drew on the principles she learned from Josef Albers and others at Lack Mountain College and her unique take on modernist design to present powerful, avant-garde works, including her signature suspended sculptures on looped wires.
Focusing on her active and formative years from 1945 to 1980, Asawa's essays, illustrations, archival images, letters, and documents give readers a unique insight into her life and work. While exploring her work from a European perspective, the book also explores how her self-identification as a "citizen of the universe" did not escape the discrimination she faced as a Japanese American woman. Asawa's revolutionary and inclusive vision of the role of art in society may be her most important legacy, providing a potential basis for creative thinking in the 21st century.
