Women in Abstraction by Christine Macel and Karolina Lewandowska

Sale price¥9,800

For a long time, the contributions of women artists to the development of abstract art have been underestimated, and their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts. However, over time, this has begun to change. There is a growing movement to reassess the contributions of women artists to abstract art in all media, including publications, books, and exhibitions.

This book was edited by Christine Macel, the museum's chief curator, to coincide with an exhibition held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2021. The exhibition focuses on around 100 women artists and how much they challenged the 19th century. By focusing on the careers of underrepresented women artists, it questions established stereotypes and explains the hidden history of abstraction, from Hilma af Klint's symbolist abstraction to Huguet Caland's sensual abstraction and Verena von Lowensburg's purist, non-objective approach. It explores the techniques, interests, and legacies of these women artists, presenting society with a sharp yet new perspective on them.
